Grace Ha is a young ceramics undergraduate student at CSULB. Something that I found very interesting about her was when I asked her what else she did besides ceramics she couldn’t find an answer, that is how invested she is in her art. Her ceramics career began 5 years ago in a community college. At first she was reluctant to choose it as a Major because it didn’t seem too stable, but after she got in the gallery show and made good money out of it she had the confidence to pursue this as a career.
Grace’s pottery really stood out to me. I noticed that it was very big and colorful, something I should consider buying in the future. It had various colors, but the black and white clearly stood out. Also, it was interesting that she actually put flowers in the biggest one, it gave it more life.
This one pottery design actually has allot of themes around it that make it special. First of all, it is big because she wanted to change the stereotype that only big and strong men could make big pottery. She gets comments once in a while of people that cant believe she actually made the big pieces of art and that inspires her to keep doing it. She also relies on technique more than brute strength. Also, she added the flowers last minute, showing quick thinking, but it was also good because it displayed femininity.
I think its very impressive how she doesnt need to use too much strength to do her pottery, it can inspire many other female potters to do the same. I absolutely love the color design and would love to see more flowers inside the pots to make them come to life more. I hope she can do this for a lonmg time and to keep getting motivation.
